The Daily Supplements I Take

By Posted on 2 Comments Location: 3 min read

Lately, we’ve all been paying more attention to our health and wellbeing than ever before. It’s certainly found its way to the forefront of all of our minds, becoming more of a priority than something we worry about once a year when we visit the doctor for our annual check up.

One way that I’ve been prioritizing my health lately is by taking daily supplements. When my holistic doctor recommended taking supplements each day to help my body make up for the nutrients  I was lacking, like vitamin D, I began to understand the importance of dietary supplements.

When it comes to supplements, there are so many options on the market. Whether you need help with strengthening your immune system, boosting your energy levels, or even improving your mood – there’s a supplement for you.

But, finding the right supplements for your own body can be tricky. So in order to get you started on thinking about which supplements are best for you, I’m sharing the list of the ones I take each day in order to maintain my own overall health and wellness.

Don’t forget that everyone’s body is different! So while these recommendations work for me, they may not be exactly what your body needs in order to function at its best. For that reason, it’s important to create an individualized approach that’s designed to give your own body the nutrients it needs to help you be healthiest you can be, and trust me narrowing down what works best for you is half the battle.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is sometimes referred to as the “sunshine vitamin” because our bodies naturally produce it when our skin is directly exposed to sunlight. It’s an essential nutrient that impacts our bone health, brain function, mood, and immune resistance against some viral infections.

Unless you spend a significant amount of time basking in the sunlight each day, chances are you might be deficient in Vitamin D. And, if you live in Canada like I do, you know that the ability to get any sunshine at all right now is but a distant summer memory, especially with the winter months quickly approaching.

Getting enough Vitamin D is even more important for individuals like me who have darker skin complexions. This is because melanin, which causes skin pigmentation, lowers our skin’s ability to make Vitamin D in response to sun exposure. I take these Vitamin D supplements, which are in a capsule form, but you can also opt for the liquid form which absorbs much quicker in our bodies.

Vitamin B12

I’ve been taking B12 vitamins for over a year and have noticed a significant increase in my energy level throughout the day. Gone are the days that I rely on caffeine to keep me energized, and those midday crashes I felt before are obsolete now.

Every single one of the B Vitamins, especially B12, help to boost energy levels and prevent fatigue. B12 also helps form red blood cells which is vital for preventing diseases like anemia.

According to Healthline, Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin that your body needs but actually cannot create on its own. While it’s found naturally in animal products, if your diet isn’t rich in meats and dairy, there could be a chance that you are deficient in it.

Taking a Vitamin B12 supplement each day can make up for that deficiency and also work to support bone health, improve mood, and promote healthy skin and hair – so it’s basically a miracle worker in the form of a daily vitamin.

Vitamin C

Most of us are no strangers to Vitamin C. Do the Flintstone vitamins you may have taken as a kid ring a bell? If so, this proves that your body may already be accustomed to taking vitamin c. Our bodies do not produce vitamin C naturally, so we must increase our intake as the temperatures drop and flu season rolls around. Vitamin C chewable’s are one of my favorite vitamins to get. They taste like you’re biting into an orange, tangy with a considerable dose of citrus flavor, yum!. According to Healthline, some of the benefits of Vitamin C include: boosting your immune system, managing high blood pressure, reducing the risk of heart disease, and improving iron absorption. Yes, please!

Probiotics

Probiotics are often deemed the “friendly bacteria” and are live bacteria that can help improve overall gut health. If you’ve ever had an infection that physicians prescribed an antibiotic for, chances are you’ve probably heard the term probiotic. In order to restore good bacteria, some doctors will recommend taking a probiotic while you complete the course of antibiotics. Probiotics have come a long way over the past decade and have vastly improved digestive health. Not only do probiotics fight the effects of bad bacteria, but this microorganism also aids in weight loss, reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression, and even improves heart health.

Multivitamins

If you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed after reading about the first four vitamins I take, then perhaps you should consider starting with taking a multivitamin. Multivitamins can help you cover most of your health-related bases like increasing low energy and aiding in memory and mood improvements. You really can’t go wrong with taking a multivitamin.

Always do your research before taking any supplement, and consult a professional or nutritionist if needed. Another critical thing to note before creating a personalized combination of daily supplements tailored to you is that some vitamins may work for someone else but not necessarily for you. A good starting point would be to get a blood test done to check for deficiencies or high levels.
