The Top Trends from Milan Fashion Week Fall Winter 2021

Ciao, babes! Fashion month is in full swing and this week we’re virtually reporting on the latest in fashion, straight from Milan.

And if there’s one thing that every single designer at MFW seemed to agree upon, it’s that post-pandemic fashion will be anything but boring. They made their message clear by adorning looks in sequins from head to toe and breaking out the OTK boots that we’re definitely made for strutting.

So toss those super-soft loungewear sets and couch-ready cozies to the side and scroll on! Below you will find the six trends that we’re deeming as Milan’s most “molto bene” for Autumn Winter 2021.

1. Opera Gloves: We saw opera gloves take over Milan’s runways, and our arms and elbows are already thanking us for the warmth they will receive in the fall. This classic accessory is having a major comeback, and we can’t wait to elevate our looks with these glam gems. A nod to Old Hollywood elegance and timeless, stunning queens of the past, this trend is a gentle reminder of the glamorous lives we once lived pre-pandemic. It’s a subtle hint from Italian Designers like Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, and Elisabetta Franchi that life will resume at full-speed, and we will have a reason to get dressed up again. So wave goodbye to short gloves and welcome their elbow-length counterparts, the opera glove.

2. Cardigans: Cardigans received a fresh revamp with oversized variations and statement prints this season. These transitional pieces offer endless styling possibilities and will be a fall and winter wardrobe necessity. For fall 2021, Prada modestly styled cardigans by fully buttoning and layering them over button-down shirts. Missoni brought us chunky cardigan’s with bold colors and the classic Missoni print we all know and love so much. If you’re looking for a practical piece to invest in this season, we recommend amping up your cardigan collection.

3. OTK Boots: Over-the-knee boots have been our old faithful for multiple seasons. They’re stylish, and with the revised iterations each season, they remain a beloved classic for us. Over-the-knee and knee-high boots flooded Milan’s runways with designers like Etro, Fendi, and Dolce & Gabbana endorsing the trend. Do your wardrobe a favor and invest in pair- you’ll thank us later.

4. Fringe

Fringe may have been made famous by cowboys, hippies and 1920s flapper girls – but this fall, fashion girls everywhere will be making this trend their own. You can catch them strutting onto the scene, fashioning fringe into their most stylish looks – from Dolce & Gabbana mini skirts to Fendi dresses and even dramatic coats a la Etro. And definitely expect this trend to take over all of your social feeds, because it’ll be begging for you to double tap before the leaves even start to fall this autumn.

5. Capes & Ponchos

Step aside Superman, you’re not the only one who can rock a cape. This year, the designers of MFW made it known that capes and ponchos will definitely be having a major moment come fall. Missoni took a cozy knitwear route, while Elisabetta Franchi adopted an equestrian-inspired aesthetic and Fendi stole the show with a super sleek style. Though each designer took a different take on the original, one thing’s for sure – you can count on a cape to provide that powerful, mysterious and ever-romantic allure all season long.

6. Sequins & Beading

Rhinestones, sequins and beading, oh my! Scintillating and sparkling details were definitely dazzling on the runway in Milan this year. They added a bit of bling to blazers and bustiers, glistening on gloves and twinkling on tops of all kinds. Whether you opt for Fendi’s silky slip dress dotted with beautiful beadwork, or Elisabetta Franchi’s maximalist maxi dress with sequins from top to bottom, the future of fashion is definitely looking bright.
